The dog days of summer are behind us as we move into September. Although there are officially three weeks of summer left, many of us begin turning our attention to fall after the Labor Day holiday. September often brings sunny days and cooler, clearer nights that seem made for astronomical observing. There is something especially fitting about beginning this season with the Moon. It is familiar to all of us, yet it never seems ordinary. Each time we turn a telescope toward its craters, mountains, and shadows, we are reminded that wonder does not always require us to look far into deep space. Sometimes it is waiting quietly in our own evening sky.
On September 19, Skyscrapers, Inc. will take part in International Observe the Moon Night at Seagrave Memorial Observatory, joining observers around the world in celebrating our nearest celestial neighbor. This club event will be an opportunity not only to look at the Moon, but also to share that experience with others — to welcome curiosity, answer questions, and perhaps help someone see the night sky in a new way.
As we look ahead to the season before us, I hope this evening reminds us why we gather as a club: to learn, to wonder, and to share the sky with one another. Whether you bring a telescope, offer a helping hand, or simply spend a few quiet moments looking up, your presence will help make the night meaningful.
