November 2023

November 2023 President’s message

By Linda Bergemann

Fall is upon us and winter is just around the corner.

November provides our last opportunity to hold our monthly meeting at Seagrave until the spring. For the months of December through March, our meetings will be held at the nearby North Scituate Community House.

Russ Chaplis, our 1st VP, has lined up programs/speakers to take us through the winter months. We will celebrate the holidays on December 16th (note date) with a potluck dinner followed by “Astronomy in 3-D” by Steve Nathan, of Eastern Connecticut State University. In January, we will be regaled by our fellow members on their experiences surrounding the October 14, 2023 annular eclipse. February we will host Dr. Martha Hanner, astronomer and planetary scientist, as our guest speaker on a yet to be announced topic. And, we will wrap up our time away with a historical presentation by our historian Dave Huestis on Frank Evans Seagrave (1860-1934) and Skyscrapers, Inc. We will be well-prepared and ready to return to Seagrave Memorial Observatory in April, for our annual meeting.

The observatory will continue to be open to the public on Saturday nights as long as the weather cooperates and the grounds are accessible. Star parties for members will be announced when conditions are favorable. If you would like to be added to the call-list for star parties, contact Steve Hubbard (cstahhs@gmail.com) or visit your profile on Night Sky Network and add your name to the “Star Parties” message group.

My gratitude goes out to those who put together these activities month after month for us all to enjoy. Please take advantage of at least some of these events. Attend a meeting, if just to mingle with other members. Attend a star party. Or, just step out gaze at the night sky.

lear skies!

Linda
