March Meeting with Ken Launie

The speaker at our March 2008 meeting was Ken Launie, member of the Amateur Telescope Makers of Boston and long time friend of Skyscrapers. Ken is a well known collector and expert on antique telescopes and also a collector of rare astronomy books and ephemera. Ken gave a presentation about collecting astronomical ephemera, including a large sampling of his observatory postcard collection. Members also displayed some of their collections of astronomically themed items.

Cranston East Star Party

On Tuesday, April 8, Skyscrapers set up 11 telescopes on the soccer field at Cranston East. Clear skies provided views of the moon passing by the Pleiades cluster, Saturn, Mars, and some spring star clusters and galaxies.

June Meeting with Gerry Dyck

Skyscrapers June 2008 Meeting featured Gerry Dyck and his presentation "Astronomical Motifs in Southeast Asian Drums." Additionally, Nicholas Rodrigues of Printmakers demonstrated a new astrophoto printing service, and Tiverton High School student Nathan Pelletier gave a presentation about the Sun and demonstrated his solar spectrograph.

Al Hall's Telescope: Its Done!

Al Hall recently completed his 16” Cassegrain telescope and its accompanying German equatorial mount. Al Hall and Dick Parker have collaborated on this project for 6 years and 5 months.

July Cookout & Meeting with Doug McGonagle

After our annual cookout on July 12, Dr. Douglas McGonagle, Chaplain Director at Newman Catholic Center at UMASS Amherst gave a talk entitled “Science and Religion, 2 Sides of the Same Coin.”

Astronomy on the Scituate Common

On Saturday, July 26, Skyscrapers participated in the Scituate Library Lawn Party with solar observing, NASA handouts, information about Seagrave Observatory, a scale model solar system and answers to astronomy questions.

AstroAssembly 2008

AstroAssembly has come and gone once again. From all reports that I have received everyone thoroughly enjoy this years AstroAssembly. We had a great lineup of speakers and, especially member Al Hall and long time friend of Skyscrapers Dick Parker, who treated us to an outstanding feat of design and craftsmanship in the construction of their respective telescopes. I look forward to viewing through both of these incredible telescopes. My hat is off for both of these astronomers.

Moon, Venus & Jupiter Conjunction

Clouds nearly dashed our spectacular views of the waning crescent moon joining the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter on a mild December night.
